Effects of Pepper Spray Pepper Spray or OC spray "Oleoresin Capsicum” is an inflammatory chemical derived from Chile peppers that irritates the eyes, nose, and throat. It is generally non-lethal except rare cases such as repeat exposure, asthma, allergic reaction, or on other drugs. The strength of the Pepper Spray will determine the duration of its effects. Average full effect will lasts around 30-45 minutes and will diminish over a period of a few hours. Effects may include; Upper body spasms, temporary blindness, coughing making it difficult to breathe or even speak, sensitivity and burning of eyes, runny nose, burning sensation of the skin, neurotoxicity, cardiovascular complications, and pulmonary toxicity.
Treatment It is virtually impossible to completely neutralize pepper spray, tear gas, and the UV dye that is a standard additive. In some cases these are not soluble in water. Treatment may include; blinking repeatedly to generate tears, mild soap to remove excess chemical. Some relief from the symptoms may include; Ice, cold water, water and aluminum hydroxide eye drops, or milk. Avoid touching areas affected for this will cause spreading of the compounds to other parts of the body.
